The meals brought to the field are so much more than a meal. The farmer’s spouse, children, and family can often be found waiting along the field edge, for them to stop for a quick bite and a hug. Meals in the field can bring a sense of home to the field after a long day’s work.
I recall growing up on the farm and bringing meals to my father, grandpa, and farmhands.
“When I was little, we had a bus that was converted to a kitchen. Aunt Martha would drive it around to the fields and everyone would get on, eat a home cooked lunch, and head back to the field. It was fun, and I always enjoyed riding along with her.
Aunt Esther always made wonderful meals for everyone; a favorite of many was ham loaf. It became a staple, and everyone looked forward to it!
I think meals in the field are extra special to me because I have been on both sides – the preparer and the recipient. I was always so excited for mealtime when we were working in the fields, and grateful for whoever brought it.
Preparing a meal to take to the field is still one of my favorite things to do. Ham loaf has continued to be a tradition for me. I like to pair it with green beans, potatoes, and a fresh fruit pie.
Whether it is during planting season or harvest, I enjoy taking a meal to the fields. A warm meal and a ‘thank you’ are two small gestures that show my gratitude for all the hard work and long hours during harvest season.
“A meal is so much deeper than just the food. I enjoy serving others through using the gifts God gave me. I have many wonderful memories of meals in the field and continue to make more. I would guess every farm family has many fond memories of meals and family time in the field, too!”
